Long Time

Assalam-o-Alaikum again after a long long time.
As you may have noticed, the blog wasn't working for almost the last three months due to some technical problems.
I can't promise you that I'll be posting articles soon but, inshallah, the blog will be working in case you need to refer back to some previous one.
Jazakallah khair for the waiting (even though you and I had had no choice of making any such decision or any news of such a thing happening).

The Scholars Of Evil

By Abu Hassan al-Hadrami
There are only two types of scholars and no other: Scholars of the Hereafter and scholars of Evil. He who is not one of the scholars of the Hereafter is among the scholars of wickedness, enamored of the vanities of this world and heedless of the Hereafter and its felicities.

Homosexuality: A Chosen Harm

First, homosexuality is a practice that those engaging in it undertake of their own free will, and not an orientation that is somehow inherently pre-determined. The very nature of the human mind will imply such a conclusion. In his 1690 Essay Concerning Human Understanding, the British filosofer John Locke, whose theories were fundamental in the creation of the American Republic, wrote “No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." This implies that, until an individual has experience with the reality in which he lives, he cannot have any knowledge. Until he has any knowledge, he cannot have any principles or inclinations, for those are themselves formed only through the use of the knowledge that the individual has already gained, as well as the principles of reasoning that he has discovered through his exposure to the external world.

Al-Qadaa' wal-Qadar - Predestination

The belief in al-Qadar (general and particular decrees) is one of the main pillars of the Islamic Faith. Most Muslims believe in this. However, a few understand what it really is.
Let us first review or explain the meaning of al-Qadar. Al-Qadar is sometimes mentioned with al-Qadaa’ in the same statement. If so then each has a distinct meaning. However, when they are mentioned separately, then either one comprises the other. So when they are stated together, then al-Qadar means that which Allaah has eternally pre-ordained (in due measure) pertaining to His creation. On the other hand, al-Qadaa' means that which Allah has decreed for His creation from existence, annihilation, or change. In this sense, al-Qadar preceeds al-Qadaa' when combined in the same sentence.

When the Reward Equals Fifty

In 'ad-Durar as-Saniyyah' (8/91-95), Shaykh Hasan bin Husayn (a grandson of Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Wahhab) was asked about the hadith:"...the one who does this will have the reward of fifty." So, he replied:

The Example of this World

Almost a couple of weeks ago, I walked into an Islamic shop to buy myself an 'atr. The shop had just opened and the man at the counter was a bit busy arranging the stuff and soon after that, he started talking on the phone so I thought that I'd just go to the books section and check out if there were any new books.
As I was looking at the books there, my eyes fell on a book which previously was only kept sealed even though there were many copies of it. However, now there was an unsealed copy of it which I assumed must have been put as a sample so that the interested customers could have a better look at it. It was the Risala-e-Nur collection by Bediuzzaman Said Nursi. I'd heard a lot about it before and now since I had a chance, I thought I'd just read it a bit.
So I opened it. I'm not sure which book from that collection it was but it was the sixth word in that book. It explained the example of a believer and a disbeliever in an extraordinary way, an example which I'd never even thought of. I'll just write it from whatever I remember and supplement it with my own words, inshallah.

Refutation of Tahir ul Qadri on asking help from dead

Introduction
This is the refutation of weak ahadith in the book "Beseeching for Help" (Istighāthah) by Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, Chapter 3 Justification of Istighāthah after Death, I will not quote rulings deduced by Dr Qadri due to their length, when hadith is weak then there is no reason to deduce ruling from a particular hadith, that also without quoting any Salaf and Muhaddith.

Years of Deceit: US openly declares bin Laden long dead

Here is the view of one of the Americans at Veterans Today. I have modified the article a bit to exclude the parts which had some disagreements. However, the link of the original article has been provided immediately after the article for those who might be interested.

May Allaah grant Osama bin Laden Martyrdom!

The announcement this morning of the death of Sheikh Osama Bin laden has been met with joy in the United States and by other enemies of Islam and Muslims. I would like remind everyone that someone much better and much more significant then Sheikh Osama Bin laden passed away in the past, namely the Messenger Muhammad (saw) and that this never stopped the Jihad nor the spread of Islam to the East and West. Indeed the Messenger Muhammad (saw) said that the day of judgement will not come until a group of Muslims conquer the White House.

A Party in Paradise and a Party in Hell

by Shaykh Abu 'Ali Nabeel al-Awadhi

Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem

Alhamdulillaahi rabil-'aalameen, was-salaatu was-salaamu 'ala nabeeyinaa muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa ashaabihi wa man tabi'ahum bi ihsaanin ila yawmid-deen, amma b'ad:

The Companions of our Prophet Muhammed (salallaahu 'alayhi wa salaam) used to gather to remember death so that they would benefit their souls by increasing in fear of Allaah and strive to gain His pleasure. If this was the case of the Sahaabah and they were the best of generations, the most pious and God-fearing of this ummah, then what about us? Surely, it means that we need to engage in the remembrance of Allaah - The Most Perfect, The Most High - even more. After all, we are in far more need of this act of worship than they were.

Tawfique Chowdhury’s Alliance with the West

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By Anwar al-Awlaki
A few months ago I was approached by students of Shaykh Tawfique Chowdhury to teach some courses at al Kauthar institute. Since this was the first time I have heard of the institute or Shaykh Chowdhury I did some research on both. Yesterday someone posted on my blog an accusation that Shaykh Tawfique was a hypocrite which I promptly deleted. I then read the article that was linked to the post and was amazed by what I have read. Not knowing Shaykh Chowdhury personally, I find it shocking to hear such a statement coming from a person who is considered to be a man of knowledge. Because Shaykh Chowdhury is considered as such and is running an institute that is imparting knowledge to hundreds of students I deem it necessary to respond to his article as an advise to him and a warning to all those who consider themselves to be his students. There is also another reason. Since 9-11 and the active involvement of the US in defining what Islam means today there has been a gradual decline in the standard of walaa’ and baraa’, with many scholars and daees in the West lowering the bar further and further. But this letter represents one of the most blatant manifestations of this phenomenon. I will comment on parts of the article but you can also read it in its entirety.

Western Laws curb Crime Rates?

Even though we constantly hear the West, its allies and the 'modernist' Muslims criticising the punishments ordained by Islam, labelling them as too violent, the crime rate in these Western countries along with those who try to follow them are alarming high as explained in the article below.
Note that USA also has a similar crime rate, if not more.

A Solution for our French sisters, inshaAllaah

Those to whom hypocrites said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."
So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty. That is only Satan who frightens [you] of his supporters. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers. And do not be grieved by those who hasten into disbelief. Indeed, they will never harm Allah at all. Allah intends that He should give them no share in the Hereafter, and for them is a great punishment.
Indeed, those who purchase disbelief [in exchange] for faith - never will they harm Allah at all, and for them is a painful punishment. And let not those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [of enjoyment] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
Allah would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would Allah reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allah chooses of His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allah and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then for you is a great reward.
And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted.

Advice to Jama'at ut Tableegh

By Shaykh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee
A lengthy transcript from a tape in which Imaam al-Albaanee discusses the various errors found amongst the sect of at-Tableegh.

If you call to Islam – you have to know what it is, beginning with Imaan and perhaps the brothers will recall the Hadeeth: "That a man came to the Prophet sallalahu alaihi wa sallam with very white clothes and black hair…

France bans Burqa yet tolerates Nudity

As a sister pointed out, "if I don't have a problem with them walking half-naked, why should they have a problem with us walking covered properly?"

The recent move by France to impose a ban on burqa, a cover-all headdress some Muslim women choose to wear, has come in contrast with the country's tolerance of public nudity.

Be mindful of Allah in prosperity, and He will remember you in adversity." [Sunan al-Tirmidhî (2516)]

A believer should be with Allah under all circumstances – in weakness and in strength, in poverty and prosperity, in happiness and sorrow, in the flower of youth and in old age, in outward expression, and in the deepest recesses of the soul.

Six Things that can Guarantee you Jannah

Ubadahh ibn Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated Allah’s Messenger (sallahu alayhi wa salim) said: “Guarantee me you’ll do six things and I guarantee you Jannah. Whenever you speak say the truth. Fulfill your promises when you make them. When you’re entrusted with something, carry out that trust. Safeguard your private parts, lower your gaze and prevent your hands from harming others.”

The Importance of Working for the Next Life

By Sheikh Muhammad Saalih Al-Uthaymeen

All praise is for Allah who created the Sun and the moon as lights and fixed them in their positions in order that you may tell the time and know (when) the reckoning (is). All p...raise is for the one who made the night and day different for the one who wants to be mindful or thankful. I bear witness that there is no deity worshipped in truth other than Allah who is alone and without partner, owner of the dominion and all praise, from Him is the beginning and to Him is the end. I also bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, the best and most virtuous of those who worship Allah and repent to Him, may peace and blessings be upon him, his family, companions, and all that follow him in perfection.

Friday Greetings

Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
There is no doubt that Friday is an “Eid” or “festival” for the Muslims, as it says in the hadeeth narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “This is a day of ‘Eid that Allah has ordained for the Muslims, so whoever comes to Jumu‘ah, let him do ghusl, and if he has any perfume let him put some on, and you should use the miswaak.” Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 1098; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said, describing the special virtues of Friday:
Thirteen: It is a day of ‘Eid that is repeated every week.

Free Mixing between Men and Women

By Imaam ibnul-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (Rahimahullah)

Rulings mentioned by Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim concerning men and women intermingly, something that is so common today, that even many of the Muslims themselves may find its prohibition strange! And Allaah's refuge is sought.

There is no doubt that allowing for the women to mix freely with the men is the origin of every trial and evil; and it is from the greatest reasons for the descending of punishment which is general (encompassing everyone) just as it is from the reasons for corruption of the general and specific affairs. Mixing between men and women is the reason for increase of fawaahish (lewdness) and fornication; and it is from the reasons for general death and contagious diseases.

April Fool

Praise be to Allaah.
Lying is not permissible at all, at any time. And it is not permissible to imitate the kuffaar and to be like them, on this day or on any other, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

The Aafia Siddiqui I saw

Today marks yet another year of the imprisonment of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui (may Allaah Azzawajal increase her ranks and hasten her release). I've added an article here along with some multimedia, at the end, in the hope that it might cause some of us to learn a lesson from her and work for her release and the release of other Muslim prisoners.

Sports Teams and Sports Channels

Ruling on supporting sports teams
Praise be to Allaah.
Blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allaah.
The Muslim should be serious in his life and keep himself busy with that for which he was created, which is the worship of Allaah alone. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone)”[al-Dhaariyaat 51:26]

The Prohibition of Nationalism in Islam

Nationalism is a concept alien to Islam because it calls for unity based on family and tribalistic ties, whereas Islam binds people together on the `Aqeedah, that is belief in Allah (swt) and His Messenger (saaw). Islam calls for the ideological bond.
Grouping the Muslims on tribalistic lines is clearly forbidden. It is narrated by Abu Da'wud that the Messenger of Allah (saaw) said,
"He is not one us who calls for `Asabiyyah, (nationalism/tribalism) or who fights for `Asabiyyah or who dies for `Asabiyyah."

Who burnt the Quran? Us or them?

It's not even a bit uncommon among Muslims that if you went to their houses and they made you sit in their drawing rooms, you would see a book wrapped in the best of cloths sitting at the top of the tallest shelf there. If you were to ask them what it was they would say 'That's the Qur'an, the best of books, the book of Allaah Azzawajal. We respect it so much that we've put it as high as we can.'

Let me give you my own introduction of this book first.
This was the book that was sent down to the most ignorant of people, the Arabs, a people whom the superpowers of that time didn't want to rule over because of their ignorance.
What did it do to them?
It transformed them to the extent that they became the rulers of more than half of this world in about 20 years after the completion of this book and these ignorant people became the world's most ideal people.

Five Types Of Abandonment Of The Qur’aan

By Ibn Al-Qayyim(Rahimahullah)

O Muslims! O Believers of the Qur’aan! Beware you do not fall into those whom the Prophet (saw) will complain about to his Lord on the Day of Judgement:

“And the Messenger (will) say: O My Lord, indeed my people took this Qur’aan as something worthy of being abandoned.” [25:30]

Weather Warfare

Recently, I published an article which showed the relationship of HAARP with the Japan earthquake. However, most of the readers understood nothing at all about it. Therefore, I have provided a short background of HAARP. Of course, you could go to Wikipedia and look there but the important information, as usual, is missing from there.

Angels don't play this HAARP!

Many people were surprised to find out that the Japan earthquake and so many other such incidents were caused by some human activity and many refused to believe it. I have compiled an article below to clarify this point, inshallah.

Your Life - A Journey

You’re on a journey. The journey is life. The destination is Paradise or Hell. The path you take on your journey will determine your destination. The length of your journey is not fixed; it will vary for each individual with some arriving at their destination in their youth whereas other will reach old age before they arrive. Yet one thing for certain is that everyone WILL arrive at their destination.

The Varying Forms of Wrongful Backbiting - Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Tamiyyah (Rahimahullaah)

There are found amongst the people those that will backbite in accordance to his gathering and his companions and his associates. Whilst his knowing that the one being backbitten is free of what it is they say – or of some of what they say. However; he sees that if he were to forbid them then the sitting will cease and the people of the sitting would become sullen with him just as they would become estranged from him. So he sees compliance with them through good social relations as well as good companionship; so when they become angered then he likewise becomes angry due to their being angered – so he takes it up with them.

Tests for the Believers: Fluctuations of Life

From :- The Inevitable Journey: Sickness, Death, and the Grave

A person’s life in this world is not stable. One passes through alternating periods of happiness and dismay, strength and weakness. wealth and povert, health and sickness etc. A true believer is one who maintains a clear level of Eemaan throughout the wordly fluctuations. He continues to remember Allah and ascribe the bounties to Him; and he turns to Him in submission, asking for relief from his affliction. This is described by the Messenger (Sallallahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam) who said: “Indeed amazing are the affairs of a believer ! They are all for his benefit; if he is granted ease of living he is thankful; and this is best for him. And if he is afflicted with a hardship, he perseveres; and this is best or him.” [Muslim]

The website Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, a student at Harvard University in America, at the beginning of 2004 CE. Use of the website was initially limited to students of the University, then the network expanded to include other universities in Boston, and eventually to include the entire world at the end of 2006 CE.
The aim behind the founding of this site was to enable people to get to know one another and build social relationships. This site is regarded as the most important virtual community on the Internet. U.S. Pulling Back in Afghan Valley It Called Vital to War

KABUL, Afghanistan — After years of fighting for control of a prominent valley in the rugged mountains of eastern Afghanistan, the United States military has begun to pull back most of its forces from ground it once insisted was central to the campaign against the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
The withdrawal from the Pech Valley, a remote region in Kunar Province, formally began on Feb. 15. The military projects that it will last about two months, part of a shift of Western forces to the province’s more populated areas. Afghan units will remain in the valley, a test of their military readiness.
While American officials say the withdrawal matches the latest counterinsurgency doctrine’s emphasis on protecting Afghan civilians, Afghan officials worry that the shift of troops amounts to an abandonment of territory where multiple insurgent groups are well established, an area that Afghans fear they may not be ready to defend on their own.

Red Heart

It could have been the splash of red or the overabundance of hearts or the young man in a designer jeans that caught his eye, but Sheikh Hamaad stopped under the bold “Valentine’s day Specials” banner, set his shopping basket on the floor and watched the young man battling to select an appropriate gift from the heaps of hearts, teddy bears and chocolates. Like a busy humming bird he flitted from shelf to shelf struggling to choose.

A Change in Egypt?

Egypt Erupts in Jubilation as Mubarak Steps Down

An 18-day-old revolt led by the young people of Egyptousted President Hosni Mubarak on Friday, shattering three decades of political stasis here and overturning the established order of the Arab world.
Shouts of “God is great” erupted from Tahrir Square at twilight as Mr. Mubarak’s vice president and longtime intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman, announced that Mr. Mubarak had passed all authority to a council of military leaders.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day

Praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his family and companions.
Allaah has chosen for us Islam as our religion and He will not accept any other religion from anyone, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

Ruling on celebrating the birthday of the Prophet - Shaykh Saalih ibn Fawzaan al-Fawzaan

Praise be to Allaah the Lord of the Worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and all his family and companions.
The commands mentioned in the Qur’aan and Sunnah to follow the laws of Allaah and His Messenger, and the prohibitions on introducing innovations into the religion are quite clear. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

Celebrating the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم)'s birthday, Mawlid, Reading Quran together and Giving good deeds to the dead

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is the Messenger of Allaah to all of mankind, the one through whom Allaah leads people from darkness into light, from misguidance to guidance.

Getting an A grade in the Final Exam

Final exams are always a nice time to focus on the true exam of life.
1. In school, you can often redo your exam if you fail. In the hereafter, if one fails there is no going back.
2. In school, you often do not know what questions will be asked. In the hereafter, there are only 3 questions: Who is your Lord? What is your Deen? And who is this man who was sent to you? But the answers are answers you live by.
3. In school, we stay up at night to prepare for the exam the next day. So too in Allah’s exam, we should be staying up in night prayers.

Anwar al-Awlaki: Israel Is The Cancer of The World Should Be Eradicated, The Islamic World Must Reform

Anwar al-Awlaki, the famous da’i who originated from the USA harshly condemned the brutal Israeli strikes on the Gaza strip, and at the same time he criticized the leaders of the Arab nations and called them “impotent” for their incapability of taking any assertive action on the Zionist regime for their brutality towards the Palestinian citizens, which had taken place for decades. In his personal blog entitled “The Meaning of Gaza”, Sheikh al-Awlaki gave three important points from his thoughts about what have been happening and what is currently happening.
First, al-Awlaki stated that the occurrence in Gaza showed that the enemies of Islam (Zionist Israel) have succeeded in giving a hard slap on the face of the Islamic ummah. He assessed that the responses received from the Islamic ummah for the brutality of the Zionist Israel were not enough and their directions were unclear. In this matter, Awlaki compared it with what happened during the time of Rasulullah SAW, the moment a Muslimah was attacked by the Jews. Rasulullah SAW declared war towards the Jews.
“Today in Gaza, though the number of casualties amongst the Palestinian Muslims had reached by their hundreds, we only saw demonstrations and criticisms, and the Arab leaders only held a high level meetings which are useless. Those were the only actions and therefore it has become our responsibility to heighten the awareness of the masses around us regarding the events.” Awlaki wrote.
Second, the da’i of the Yemeni descendant stated that what was faced by the Palestinians in Gaza was a clear indication that the Islamic world has long been experiencing bankruptcy. Their leaders are impotent. According to Awlaki, the defects in the governments of the Islamic world could not be fixed anymore and they should be uprooted down to its finest roots to be replaced. Such a conclusion had been thought over by many Muslim countries, but there was always a camp who still debated against it on the name of the rulers who have betrayed and caused the Islamic ummah to be defeated.
“The fact is, our kings and presidents are getting further from playing their roles and nearer towards protecting their own interests, as well as the interests of the modern crusader forces. They trained the military and security forces only to muzzle the Islamic ummah and not as a responsibility to defend the interests of the Islamic ummah. Instead, the leaders of the Islamic world are suspicious and feeling sick of the Islamic ummah,” Awlaki criticized.
He reminded the Islamic ummah not to be fooled again by the “criticisms” given by the Muslim leaders. Sheikh al-Awlaki took Egypt as an example, which he considered as taking part in attacking Gaza and implementing the blockade on the people of Gaza.
“If the Islamic ummah today is thinking of performing jihad, the first to stop them from performing jihad are the leaders of the Islam world,” Awlaki said.
Third, according to al-Awlaki, the state of Israel must be destroyed like how Rasulullah SAW expelled the Jews from the Arab peninsula. The Jews in Palestine must be driven out to the other side of the sea until there is no more Israeli civilians, only the Muslim citizens remain.
“When the enemies are attacking the women and children, we must also make their women and children as our enemies and targets. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen said, ‘if the enemies are killing our women and children, to me it means that we can also kill the women and children of our enemies as it would weaken their hearts and embarrass them,’” al-Awlaki explained.
He also quoted the translation of al-Quran, surat al-Baqarah verse 194 which says, “If then any one transgresses the prohibition against you, Transgress ye likewise against him. But fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves.”
In this regard, al-Awlaki affirmed again that women and children could not be made as targets of attacks in a war. But if we are fought against and it has forced us to fight back, then in this particular case we are allowed to kill the non-combatant parties. Awlaki took the example of the attacks on Taif using catapults during the time of Rasulullah. The same goes with today’s situation, there are two methods adopted by the Palestinian fighters, the method of martyrdom operations and rocket attacks on the invaders’ territories. These two methods could not avoid the casualties from amongst the women and children.
What is happening in Gaza is an even bigger dimension, where the Zionist Jews have made the entire community of Gaza as the target of a blockade and uncontrollable bombardments. “That is the reason why I tend to incline towards the opinion of Ibn Uthaymeen in a specific situation like this,” Awlaki wrote.
Looking at the situation that is happening in Palestine, he stated his agreement with the methods adopted by the Mujahideen and he also agreed with the statement of the Mujahideen, that they would never stop targeting the Israeli civilians as it was Israel who first started committing the same acts.
Sheikh Anwar al-Awlaki stated that he was ready to reassess his view if anybody could give him references regarding the said issue.
He prayed to Allah SWT so that He would soon lift the sufferings of the people of Gaza, stretch out His hand and give victory to the people of Gaza. And prayed so that Allah SWT would forgive the shuhada and give victory to the Mujahideen of Palestine. Ameen.

Sister Raise Your Head & Stay Strong!

I have been too scared to write about you, more precisely too ashamed to have abandoned you, a shame that turned into fear, my beloved sisters, but now, it can wait no more. Yes I mean you, O my oppressed sisters in the prisons and you, who are now released yet living the Hell of social taboo, in our merciless societies. Why… you have committed no sin, you have done no wrong, yet those looks of pity and lowness do not leave your pious beings.
I do not know whether to condemn our societies, or whether to console you. You, who are victims of our silence, the sacrifice on behalf of the remaining us, milestones on the road to victory. When did anyone see you do evil? When did they see you look at another man? Did not these same societies stand witness to you chastity? Did they not praise you for being one so righteous? And now after these tough times when you were taken away from yourself, when you were not allowed to be yourself, when things done to you were out of your control, when people were sleeping comfortably in their homes while your screams and cries were ringing across the prisons and police stations… why then are you looked at differently?

Celebrating the New Year

Origins
January is named after Janus, the Roman god of doors and gateways. He was commonly depicted in statues, carvings and paintings as a two headed man with one head facing forward and the other head facing backwards. In 46BC Julius Caesar chose January 1st as the first day of the New Year as Janus symbolically represented the door to the New Year. Wild parties and orgies were held on the night before the New Year’s Day as a re-enactment of the chaos which Roman mythology depicted as preceding the cosmos or the ordered world whose organization was set by the gods. Furthermore, by that time, Janus had become, in practice, the highest god receiving the ritual sacrifices of Roman worshippers before the other gods, including the chief god, Jupiter.[1]
