Dr. Zakir Naik's View on Music in Islam

Prohibition of music is recorded in many authentic Ahadith.

Narrated Abu Malik Al-Ashari:
"The Messenger (pbuh) of Allah (SWT) said, "Some people of my Ummah will drink wine, calling it by other than its real name, merriment will be made for them through the playing of musical instruments and the singing of lady singers. Allah will cleave the earth under them and turn others into monkeys and swines.
[Ibn Ma'jah Vol.5 Hadith No.4020]

Narrated Abu Amir or Abu Malik Al Ashari that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection." [Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol.7 Hadith No.5590]

However, there are some Ahadith which indicate that it is permissible to beat the daff i.e. the tambourine (which is open on one side and covered on the other).

Narrated Urwa on the authority of Aisha
on the days of Mina, (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah) Abu Bakr came to her while two young girls were beating the tambourine (daff) and the Prophet was lying covered with his clothes. Abu Bakr scolded them. The Prophet uncovered his face and said to Abu Bakr, "Leave them, for these days are the days of 'Id and the days of Mina." [Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol.2 Hadith No.987]

Narrated Ar Rabi (the daughter of Muawwidh bin Afra):
After the consummation of my marriage, the Prophet came and sat on my bed as far from me as you are sitting now, and our little girls started beating the tambourines (daff) and reciting elegiac verses mourning my father, who had been killed in the battle of Badr. One of them said, among us is a Prophet who knows what will happen tomorrow. On that the Prophet said, Leave this (saying) and keep on saying the verses which you had been saying before. [Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol.7 Hadith No.5147]

Therefore from the above evidence it is concluded that the use of musical instruments in general is forbidden in Islam, with the exception of the 'Daff'.

Music usually intoxicates a person and takes one away from the path of Allah (swt). Music engages a persons mind and takes him/her away from the remembrance of his/her Creator and from realizing and focusing his/her attention on the purpose of his/her creation. In musical songs, most of the times the listeners even appreciate illogical, incorrect and blasphemous matter and content. A person will realize this when he starts pondering over the meaning of many Hindi and English songs, lyrics and ghazals. Here we find that it is because of music that the persons mind is intoxicated and the person deviates from the straight path. And Allah Knows the Best.

All things are permitted in Islam except those that have been specifically prohibited in the Quran and by the Holy Prophet (pbuh). Some of the ahadith about so-called prohibition of musical instruments in Islam are not authentic in the opinion of scholars of Islam. Music or any other activity (sports) that makes one neglect the mandatory aspects of the practice of Islam are not permissible. However Music per se is not prohibited. It is only the excess of this (and another activity) to the detriment of remembering Allah (swt) that would be prohibited

he doesn't have enough knowledge on music...you can't refer to music as all the dirty music you hear..some music is very pure and healthy..such as classical music..it has benefits and makes people smarter..it is even used as a medicine in musical therapy..in terms of intoxication this is a dangerous word to use you need to be careful because music isn't the type of "intoxication" used like drinking where you will lose your ability to think rationally but rather the "intoxication" is like meditation..certain relaxing musics are very pure and will relieve depression make people happy and improve their health..it is very similar to how the quran is recited..if you have noticed in tarweeh prayers you will sometimes lose yourself into the beautiful recitation..is that "intoxication"? c'mon be sensible..it's more of a meditation..music is also a form of expression..like poetry, it is an art..yes music can be used in bad ways to lead to dirty and bad ways..but that is the same with almost everything...for example eating is a basic necessity to life but if you eat too much and ruin your health..then this is bad in islam too..however doesn't mean eating is forbidden in islam just the bad ways of doing things. I recommend you read http://www.islamonline.net/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Islamonline-English-Ask_Scholar/FatwaE/FatwaE&cid=1119503544202 on music..

I suggest Dr. Naik gets more knowledge on music before speaking so freely on this subject

As I said, also visit http://islamicb.blogspot.com/2009/06/islamic-perspective-of-music-can-it-be.html as it contains many ahadith. Also, as you said, music is used as medicine in therapy. However, note that medicines are not used in daily life by everyone. It is used by those who are suffering from a disease and there is a chance of a cure through that. Why, then, should music be allowed for someone who is not in need of it?

As a preceding commenter stated, it actually helps in improving multiple aspects of intelligence. Why not improve the cognitive functionality? Why avoid it? Why not listen to it in periods of affliction? Why prefer to remain distressed?
You are spreading fallacious information. Please stop, as it is a sin.

As I said, the following link should be visited:
http://islamicb.blogspot.com/2009/06/islamic-perspective-of-music-can-it-be.html
Also, why not use listen to something else which is better such as the recitation of the Holy Quran?

firstly: Is there any mention of MUSIC in the holy Quraan?? Allowed or forbidden or even any indicative incident??
secondly: I see people with so many different views about music on the basis of different Hadith; is there anyway that we can verify the authenticity of those Hadiths?

Imad-ud-din Saqib said...

The scholars are actually very clear about it. Visit http://islamicb.blogspot.com/2009/06/islamic-perspective-of-music-can-it-be.html for more proofs.
Here is one example from the Quran:
Allah Taala mentions
((From amongst men there are those who purchase ‘lahw al hadith’ without knowledge,
to mislead from the Path of Allah and they ridicule it. For them there is a humiliating
punishment)). (Luqmân: 6)

The following great Commentators state that ‘lahw al hadith’ in the above verse refers to
music….
a) Abdullah ibn Mas‘ûd radiyallâhu ‘anhu
b) Jâbir ibn ‘Abdillah radiyallâhu ‘anhu
c) Abdullâh ibn ‘Abbâs radiyallâhu ‘anhu
d) Hasan al-Basrî rahimahu Allah
e) Ikrimah rahimahu Allah
f) Ebrahim an Nakhi rahimahu Allah
g) Maymoon bin Mahran rahimahu Allah
h) Qatada rahimahu Allah
i) Sa‘îd ibn Jubayr rahimahu Allah
j) Mujâhid rahimahu Allah
k) Amr ibn Shu`ayb rahimahu Allah
l) Ali ibn Badhîmah rahimahu Allah
m) Habeeb rahimahu Allah
n) Makhûl. rahimahu Allah
o) Abd al Kareem rahimahu Allah
p) Ibn Zakhr rahimahu Allah
q) Ataa al Khuraasaani rahimahu Allah

The two greatest commentators of this Ummah, Abdullah bin Masood and Abdullah bin
Abbaas (radiyallâhu ‘anhuma), used to take an oath and say that this verse refers to
music.
