Fasting in Ramadan

By Abdul Karim Awad. With the advent of another Ramadan, a mixture of feelings overwhelm the hearts of Muslims all over the world. The hearts are full of hope, based on truthful promises and glad tidings given by Allah and his Messenger, of great bounties and endless bliss. The past sins would be forgiven for those who fast, based on belief (Emaan) and truly expecting the reward of Allah (Ihtisaab). The previous sins will be forgiven for those who offer night prayers (Qiyaam) during this month, and who do this with the 2 conditions of Emaan (belief) and Ihtisaab. There is a night on this month which is better (in rewards) than a thousand months of worship, and all sins will be forgiven for those who spend this night in offering prayer with both Emaan (belief) and Ihtisaab. The devils will be chained down, the gates of Hell will all be shut and the gates of paradise will alll be open throughout this month. Allahj will free (from punishment) some of his Ibaad (worshippers) on every night of this month of Ramadan. Allah answers the du'aa (suplications) of the fasting person at the Iftaar (fast- breaking). Allah multiplies the reward of fasting beyond the limits of imagination. The fasting person will be joyous and happy when he meets his Lord.

The Nature of Fasting

By: Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah
This is a translation one of the smaller publications from the works of Shaykh Al-Islam Taqiuddin Ahmad bin 'Abdul-Halim Ibn Taymiyyah. It has been published in this form a variety of times with a number of minor additions to the text under the title, "Hagigatus-Siyam," or, "The Nature of Fasting." We have revised our version to meet the source section of Majmu' AI-Fatawa (25:219) from where it appears that the original booklet - with the exception of the questions, of which most appear on earlier pages - has been taken. We have inserted brackets to signify the additions, which earlier publishers probably took from other sections of his writings. We have also added brief references to the text for the Hadiths. I would like to express gratitude to brother Ebrahim Aly Ma'rouf for the original translation of this booklet, and the Darussalam staff for their editing and layout work.

The Islamic Month (The Month Of Ramadhan)

Matters Related to Fasting

By Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid. Allah has blessed His slaves with certain seasons of goodness, in which hasanat (rewards for good deeds) are multiplied, sayyi'at (bad deeds) are forgiven, people's status is raised and the hearts of the believers turn to their Lord. Those who purify themselves attain success and those who corrupt themselves fail. One of the greatest acts of worship is fasting, which Allah has made obligatory to his slaves. As the status of this act of worship is so high, it is essential to learn the Ahkam (rulings) that have to do with the month of fasting, so that the Muslim will know what is obligatory, in order to do it, what is haram, in order to avoid it, and what is permissible, so that he does not need to subject himself to hardship by depriving himself of it. This book is a good summary of the rulings, etiquettes, and Sunnah of fasting.

Repentance In Ramadaan

This book is a consise work on the importance of repentance during the holy month of Ramadhan.  It is an invigorating short book that insh’Allah will provoke an emotive response and inspire the reader to take advantage of the blessings Allah has permitted us… In the words of the author, this book was written ‘for everyone who wants to change his situation and his actions so as to earn the pleasure of his Creator and achieve happiness in this world and in the Hereafter’.

Fiqh of Fasting
By Bilal Philips. The prescribed book for the course is Subulus-Salaam by the 17th century Yemenite scholar Muhammad ibn Ismaa‘eel as-San‘aanee which is a commentary on Buloogh al-Maraam written by Haafiz Ibn Hajar al- ‘Asqalaanee. In Buloogh the author gathered the majority of the hadeeths which are commonly used as the basic evidences for the Islaamic legal system. The course material is comprised of the Chapter on Fasting (Kitaab as-Siyaam) from Subulus-Salaam.
Essentials of Ramadhan
By Tajuddin B. Shuaib. Extract from book: 'this is an in-depth resume of the essential rules and laws on the fiqh of fasting designed to proivide the reader with explanations for both spiritual and physical significance and uniqueness of this remarkable act of worship.'

Zakat al-Fitr

By Muhammad Salih Al-Munajjid. This short book explains the necessity for the proper collection and distribution of Zakat.

Laylat ul-Qadr

`A'ishah (radhiAllâhu `anha) reported that she asked Allâh's Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, "O Messenger of Allâh! If I knew which night is Laylat ul-Qadr, what should I say during it?" And he instructed her to say: Allahumma innaka 'affuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni' O Allâh! You are forgiving, and you love forgiveness. So forgive me. [Recorded by Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and at-Tirmithi]

The Fasting and the Furious

Muhammad Alshareef discusses how to overcome the motivation dip in the middle of Ramadan. Ramadan is like a 3-lap NASCAR race that most kick off with a well-oiled and fuelled machine only to discover it needs maintenance by the time it hits Lap 2. Because they haven’t prepared for the middle slack before they rev again into the last 10 days of Ramadan, they’ve suffered a major loss in being the foremost in ‘ibaadah

Ramadan Lecture Series

By Sheikh Feiz. In this four part series Sheikh Feiz explains many of the virtues of Ramadan aswell as anwering many common questions asked on the rules of fasting in the month of Ramadan. Allah says in the Qur'an: 'Oh you who believe Observing As-Saum (fasting) has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious)'. [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183]

Fruits Of Ramadan

One of the scholars said: The person who is fasting must fast with his eyes and not look at anything that is not permissible; with his ears and not listen to anything that is not permissible; with his tongue and not speak any obscene words or slander any one or tell lies or backbite. The believer should make the most of this blessed month in which the devils are chained up, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and a caller cries out, “O seeker of good, go ahead; O seeker of evil, desist!” The believer should make the most of this month so that he may draw closer to Allaah, repent sincerely from all his sins and make a pledge to Allaah to adhere to His religion and laws.

Eating Habits in Ramadan

By Kamal El-Mekki. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) addressed his companions on the last day of Sha`ban, saying, "Oh people! A great month has come over you; a blessed month; a month in which is a night better than a thousand months; month in which Allah has made it compulsory upon you to fast by day, and voluntary to pray by night. Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is Heaven. It is the month of charity, and a month in which a believer's sustenance is increased. Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast, shall have his sins forgiven, and he will be saved from the Fire of Hell, and he shall have the same reward as the fasting person, without his reward being diminished at all." [Narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah]

Benefits of Ramadan

By Ali At-Timimi (May Allah hasten his release from prison..ameen). In the month of Ramadaan it is very important that we spent a few moments to understand some of the wisdoms and lessons that we can learn from this month of fasting. Unfortunately, many Muslims come in to this month and they are as a companion of the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Let it not be that the day that you fast and the day that you break fast be equal."

Ramadan: Stop, Revive, Survive

Sheikh Bilal Dannoun explains many of the virtues of Ramadan as well as answering many common questions asked on the rules of fasting in the month of RamadanAllah says in the Qur'an:'Oh you who believe Observing As-Saum (fasting) has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious)'

Preparing for Ramadan

A talk given by Shaykh Zahir regarding the virtues of the blessed month of Ramadhan and how to prepare for it.

Are You Ready For Ramadan?

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah [i.e. to say Takbir (Allahu-Akbar; Allah is the Most Great) on seeing the crescent of the months of Ramadan and Shawwal] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.(2:185)

Sprinting the Last Ten Days of Ramadan

"Verily, We sent it down in the night of al-Qadr. And what will make you know what the night of al-Qadr is? The night of al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Spirit by their Lord's permission with all Decrees. Peace! Until the appearance of dawn."(Al-Qadr: 1-5)
